...As for critical reading of dense texts, that was a major component of Academic Decathlon, which I coached for seven years. Writing is an art form. We do learners a disservice by training them to follow rigid frameworks for composing essays (e.g., the 5-paragraph essay). This has gotten worse with the emphasis on standardized testing.
