...We learn things when we can relate what we are learning to something we are already familiar with. For example, if a student is studying how animals adapt to their environment, it is simple to tie it into their knowledge by explaining that when it is cold outside, we usually wear warmer clothes, put the heat on, etc. It is also important that my student feels comfortable with me.
